I’m often asked, “Why run a women’s leadership programme? Why not just have an open leadership programme for everyone?”

It’s a fair question. After all, leadership is leadership. Women don’t need a different set of leadership skills.

The reason is that women often experience leadership differently. They can face different expectations, have less access to influential networks and sponsors, and are still underrepresented in many senior leadership roles, across many occupational areas.

If you look at the numbers in most organisations, women are typically much less visible in senior leadership teams than they are in the wider workforce. That means they often have fewer role models, fewer opportunities to build relationships with senior leaders, and fewer chances to learn from people with similar career and life experiences.

A women’s development programme also creates valuable networking opportunities. Participants build relationships across teams and functions, expand their professional networks, and develop connections that often continue long after the programme has finished. These networks can become a source of support, collaboration, sponsorship and career opportunities throughout their careers.

A women’s development programme creates space to explore these realities openly, build confidence, strengthen networks, and learn from peers who may be navigating similar challenges. Just as importantly, it connects participants with senior women leaders whose experiences can make leadership feel more achievable.

The goal isn’t to prepare women to fit into the system better. It’s to help talented women thrive while organisations continue the equally important work of creating more inclusive cultures and leadership pathways.

Women’s programmes work best when they’re part of a broader leadership strategy, not instead of one. Open leadership programmes remain essential, but targeted programmes can help address the specific barriers that contribute to women being underrepresented at senior levels.

PDC are proud to work in partnership with USW as we create opportunities for women to develop, connect and thrive.
